“Can you materialize and produce the re-conceptualization of recycled trash bins?”
Mario Hofman – Technical designer, Tomorrowland
In partnership with Tomorrowland's design team, we revitalized Fosfor's original trash bin concept, redefining the aesthetics while introducing new functionalities.
— Objectives
REPURPOSING OLD BINS
Beyond aesthetic and functional improvements, the project took a sustainable approach by repurposing old bins. This approach not only reduced waste but also set up a closed-loop system in line with Tomorrowland's environmental values.
RAPID TRANSITION FROM CONCEPT TO REALITY
Despite the time constraints, we seamlessly transitioned from conceptualization to production, installation, and the establishment of a streamlined logistical system.
— Some key features
MATERIALIZATION CHOICES
Extensive material exploration led to the choice of polypropylene and the implementation of advanced production techniques such as rotamolding, blowmolding, laser cutting, rolling, and welding. The colour palette drew inspiration from the recycling of old bins.
LIGHT INTEGRATION
To elevate user experience, our team introduced innovative lighting systems, designed to operate autonomously without the need for cables. This innovative addition aimed to amplify the visual impact of the bins.
LOGISTICAL SYSTEM
Our team managed the entire logistics and assembly process, engaging with sheltered workshops to realize the production of 800 Calyx Bins. The challenge was substantial, with a tight timeline and no room for traditional prototyping – causing a bold and risk-aware approach.
The rapid transformation from concept to reality, overcoming logistical challenges and integrating innovative features highlights our commitment to pushing the boundaries of design engineering.
